New life from a steadfast God

Scripture:   How clearly the sky reveals God’s glory!

                    How plainly it shows what he has done!

                    Each day announces it to the following day; each night repeats it to the next.

                    No speech or words are used, no sound is heard;

                            yet their message goes out to all the world and is heard to the ends of the earth.

                     God made a home in the sky for the sun;

                     It comes out in the morning like a happy bridegroom,

                             like an athlete eager to run a race.

                     It starts at one end of the sky and goes across to the other.

                             Nothing can hide from its heat.     Psalms 19: 1-6 (TEV)

Devotional Thought:

     I am awakened by the warm spring sun shining on to my bed. Soon follows the cooing of the mourning doves and the rhythmic peck of the woodpecker, all responding to the light and warmth of the sun. A new day with new possibilities. A new season with new life. It is so peaceful. So, calming. My first response is to rollover and bask in the beauty, in the warmth, in the new possibilities. I want to stay in bed and keep it all for me. I think of how I could use this beautiful day for me – a slow peaceful breakfast in the spring sun, a nap, read that book which sits on the shelf unread.

    But I like the mourning doves and woodpeckers need to respond to the sun God has placed in the sky. I need to respond to the Son God has given for me. In gratitude, I need to respond to the light and warmth of God’s Son. How shall I use this new day to do God’s work? How shall I show God’s Son to others? How will I spread the light and warmth of God’s love?

As we move through Lent ever closer to Easter, we focus on the promise of new life God gives us through Jesus’ death and resurrection. The Son shines grace and salvation on us. We are given new life. How will we respond to this gift? How will we use the new life given us?

I wonder at how the Old Testament and New Testament are woven together.

I wonder, how God wants this new Easter life to be used.

I wonder, what response God desires from us.

Prayer:

Dear God,

    Thank you for Your sun which gives us physical life.

    Thank you for Your Son who gives us spiritual life.

    Help us to respond joyfully as the birds do.

    Help us to respond faithfully as You are unwavering to us.

Amen.

Thoughts for my younger friends after the scripture is read to them:

I wonder, have you ever watched a sunrise and the earth wake up in the morning.

I wonder, have you heard the story of how God’s Son rose from the dead.

I wonder, what God wants you to do with each new day.
