WORDS

May these words of my mouth and this meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer.  Psalm 19:14

David, the writer of the Psalms, wanted the words of his mouth and the thoughts of his heart to be pleasing to the Lord.   Take notice that he did not say, acceptable or just ok, he wanted them to please his Creator.

With this in mind, our words and thoughts should do the same.  Our words should be selected carefully in order to emulate our relationship with God.  They should be used to lift up others in a world that so often wants to tear us down.  Our words should provide comfort and/or edify those who hear them.

We need filter our words through our mind and heart as Jesus teaches us that our heart is the source of our words. "For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks" (Matthew 12:34).

Question:  When is the last time you stopped to think, “Are these words what I want to say or is this what I should say as a Christian?”

Sticks and stones may break our bones,
But our bones can all be healed
When hurtful words are spoken to us,
The brokenness is often concealed
Hidden away deep down inside
Where nobody can ever reach in,
Only God's hand can heal the hurt
If we allow His love to come in

Lord, please help us speak the words
That will build up and edify,
Words that will bring comfort and hope
That will truly unify
It's so easy to come out with words
Filled with anger and hurt,
Words that divide sisters and brothers
That hasn't been laced with God's word

How easy it is to speak the words
That discourages one another,
Giving our own opinions and advice
Without understanding each other
Lord, I pray you'll speak through us
With words that truly uplift,
Words that always encourages.
And hearts willing to forgive

Help us, Lord, to realize our words
Can bruise the human soul
And can build a wall of indifference
Where our spirits slowly grow cold
Help us, Lord, to realize the pain
That others can feel inside
When we speak negativity
And discouragement into their lives

We must be ever mindful of
The words we come to speak
And ask ourselves – 'Will they build up',
For words can cut so deep
If we could only grasp this,
We would only speak words of hope
That brings blessing and encouragement
And helps one another to grow.

Father God, let us acknowledge that your words are a gift.  We should use them responsibly and carefully in order to build you up as well as those around us.  Amen.

Every night at the dinner table, our family takes turns telling each other what we’re thankful for from the day. It never fails that one of our kids shares that they’re thankful for a good dinner, even if they struggled to get all of it down. Love One Another

  "Love one another as I have loved you." John 13:34 Today is Maundy Thursday. Maundy is derived from the Latin word "mandatum" meaning "command." Towards the end of the Last Supper, Jesus gives his disciples a new commandment, to "love one another as I have loved you."   When I reflect on how I have loved others, I feel convicted to admit that I gravitate toward what comes naturally and is convenient. For me it is sending cards of encouragement and support. For others, their go-to gesture of love might be making a meal or sending flowers. It is wonderful when we can share our time and talents to love others, but I would challenge us to contemplate how we can do a better job loving others.  Our agenda, responsibilities, and needs often interfere or take precedence. We often show acts of kindness when it is convenient and fits our schedule. It is easier to extend gestures of love to a friend, but not as easy when the person in need isn't someo...

The Cry of Our Souls

Psalm 42:1-2,5-8,11   As the deer pants for flowing streams,      so my soul longs for you, O God.   We know what thirst for water feels like. It is an unmistakable sensation. When we experience thirst, it may be because we missed earlier cues to hydrate. Now our body, already becoming dehydrated, has sent us a more obvious signal, an uncomfortable cue, one we will certainly recognize and act on.   But do we recognize when our soul thirsts for God?   My soul thirsts for God,      for the living God. Parenting manuals will tell us that when a baby cries it is important to consider the sound of the cry. They tell us that careful observation will help us to distinguish between a cry of hunger and a cry of pain, between the cry of a sleepy baby and the cry of a baby who is merely bored and in need of stimulation.
